Why ExpatOne exists

After more than 20 years of calling Dubai home, I thought I understood expat life in the UAE pretty well. The city, the people, the unwritten rules — I had it figured out. Then I moved to another Emirate.

What felt like a short drive suddenly became a completely different experience. Finding a reliable plumber, a good school, a trustworthy mechanic, or even just a decent grocery delivery — none of it was obvious anymore. The local knowledge I had built up over two decades simply didn't transfer. Recommendations that worked in Dubai meant nothing here, and word-of-mouth felt out of reach when you don't yet know whose word to trust.

The frustration was real, but it also made something clear: this is the universal expat experience. It doesn't matter whether you're moving between Emirates, between countries, or between continents — when you arrive somewhere new, the friction is the same. Services work differently. Expectations differ. And the little things that locals take for granted can take an outsider years to learn.

I built ExpatOne because I believe the answer is already out there — it's just locked inside the heads of people who've been there longer. People who share similar cultural backgrounds, similar expectations, and similar definitions of “good service.” People who, given the right place to share, will help each other avoid the pitfalls they once stumbled through alone.

ExpatOne is that place. It's not about complaining — it's about connecting. About turning hard-won experience into something useful for the next person who arrives with a suitcase and a long to-do list.
